In the late 1800s, Arenac County was experiencing rapid growth and development. The need for a secure facility to house prisoners became evident, leading to the construction of the first Arenac County Jail in 1887. The original jail was a two-story brick structure located on Main Street in the county seat of Standish. It featured eight cells, a sheriff's office, and living quarters for the jailer.
Expansion and Modernization
As the county continued to grow, so did the demand for jail space. In 1967, a new jail facility was constructed behind the courthouse in Standish. This larger facility included 24 cells, a kitchen, a medical room, and an exercise area. The new jail also provided improved security measures and more comfortable living conditions for inmates.
